Both thorium-232 and thorium-230 are present in soil and ores in secular equilibrium with radium-228 and radium-226, respectively. The health risks for these two radium U-232 has a 70 year half-life so it takes a long time for these gammas to come back. The one hypothetical proliferation concern with Thorium fuel though, is that the Protactinium can be chemically separated shortly after it is produced and removed from the neutron flux (the path to U-233 is Th-232 -> Th-233 -> Pa-233 -> U-233). Thorium is weakly radioactive: all its known isotopes are unstable, with the six naturally occurring ones (thorium-227, 228, 230, 231, 232, and 234) having half-lives between 25.52 hours and 14.05 billion years. A 12 gram sample of Thorium - 232 was found to be 42.3 billion years old.

In fact, its half-life is considerably longer than the age of earth. Therefore 232 Th belongs to primordial nuclides. Th-232, and a half-life of 14 billion years. Thorium applications have been very few, but nuclear fuel is one. 2.1 History. The interest of using thorium as nuclear

Thorium 232, which alone makes up nearly all natural thorium, is the most common isotope of thorium in the nature. This isotope has the longest half-life (1.4 x 10 10 years) of all isotopes with more than 83 protons.

Richard Martin was the first to write about thorium in the mainstream press. have over the years been involved in thorium-232 as an energy source. this is of course in mind the advantage of the relatively short half life of the waste products.

In thorium …isotopes, predominantly the very long-lived thorium-232 (1.40 × 10 10-year half-life), the parent of the thorium radioactive decay series. Other isotopes occur naturally in the uranium and actinium decay series, and thorium is present in all uranium ores. Thorium-232 is useful in breeder reactors because on capturing slow-moving neutrons It is demonstrated that the halflife of 232 Th can be determined by dissolving a known amount of Th(NO 3) 4 ṡ4H 2 O in a liquid scintillator and using a difference method to obtain the counting rate due to and particles.(AIP) Thorium 232, which alone makes up nearly all natural thorium, is the most common isotope of thorium in the nature.
